When the city of Östersund was about to celebrate 200 years as a city in 1986, several parties found it suitable to investegate the possabilities to protect Storsjöodjuret by law. Two parties meant that also the environment around the monster had to be protected including a possible lair and/or eggs and/or offspring. Only one party called upon the fact that so far no one had been able to present physical proof of Storsjöodjuret existence and that it therefore could not be protected by law.
In 1986 the statutes around Storsjöodjuret was presented concerning the whole environment around Storsjöodjuret with possible lair, eggs and/or offspring.
The protection of Storsjöodjuret was revoked in 2005.
In 2003, a private person applied for permission to pick up the eggs from the Storsjöodjuret, and to set up an enclosure. The application was rejected at first and a legal process followed. Finally the Ombudsmen of Justice (JO) found out that the protection of Storsjöodjuret wasn't supported by the law (since there were no presentable physical proof of the monsters existence at hand) and therefore the protection of Storsjöodjuret was revoked in 2005. |
