Observation sites for observing Storsjöodjuret

From summer 2000 onwards, observation sites along lake Storsjön will make it easier for visitors to identify the places where a sighting of the Storsjö Monster is most likely. A map showing the location of these observation stations as well as other sights in the area is available to visitors.

The map and the observation stations are part of a tourism development project set up by the local authorities around lake Storsjön.

Many sightings of the Storsjö Monster at Vallsundet!
Through the ages, many sightings of the Storsjö Monster have been reported at Vallsundet. For instance, on 30 July 1994 at 10.02 p.m a couple was standing at the headland at Frösö Strand, not far from here. The lake was still and clear like a mirror, and the evening was warm, 22 centigrades, although it was already 10 in the evening. The couple stood there looking across Vallsundet in the direction of Sandviken, where music was being played.

As they stood there, they suddenly noticed something moving along the surface of the water. It looked like a grey log with small humps. The couple ran up a nearby hillock to get a better view.

The observation site at Vallsundet is a beautiful sculpture of Storsjöodjuret made of red limestone. If you look through the sculpture you can see the city hall of Östersund. The place is a perfect spot for a pic nic.

The Storsjö Monster visits Trångsviken
Whitsun eve of 1985 was a beautiful, calm evening. Sonja Lindgren had gone out into the garden to water the flowers. On her way back to the house she stopped by the porch to look out across the lake to admire the fantastic scenery of the water with the mountains in the background

Suddenly, as Sonja stood there looking at the lake, she could see the water begin to ripple until it was boiling with movement. Out of the waters came a giant snake, which dived and emerged again, now only half of it visible.

This is the beginning of the story told at Trångsviken observation site. Here you can also watch the monster babe Trångla swim in the bay.

The Storsjö Monster in Håkansta
It happened in the autumn of 1997. The air was cold, but the sun was still warm. There were no vessels in sight apart from the ferry chuffing back and forth between Håkansta and Norderön. Two teenage boys from the village had taken their rubber dinghy out on the lake to go rowing. A few hundreds of metres away from the shore, by Gammelgården heritage farm and Marby old church, their peaceful progress was disturbed by a peculiar noise which quite frightened the boys. Was somebody in trouble, calling for help? Suddenly the little rubber dinghy began to rock in a most alarming way…

The observation site is a large camera and a pair of binoculars which you can climb around on. And guess what you can see through the lense in the camera…

Member of parliament sees Storsjö Monster at Hackås!

One beautiful, sunny day in June 1863, Jöns Bromée, a member of the parliament of Sweden, and several of the people in his household saw an unusually large animal splashing around in lake Storsjön close to the shore at Hackås. According to Bromée’s mother-in-law it was children, "splashing around and making a racket". This was not so. The animal was large and evil looking, with many thick, stumpy legs.

The story in its whole is told at the observation site at Hackås, in the barn next to the medieval church.
